When I was young, I took pictures of the clouds.
Not only did the sky give me a new "subject" to photograph every few minutes, but it taught me a thing or two about how things fit together in a visual space. At its most simple, the shapes of clouds constantly changed on the negative-space-canvas of a bright blue sky. Rather than "cumulus" and "cirrus" I was focused on "composition" and "contrast."
To this day, my work continues to prioritize these two elements. I am drawn to capturing the ways in which things fit together, whether it's intentional organization, like the way buildings line up on a busy street, or completely natural, like the way leaves frame not-yet-ripe fruit growing on a tree.
Additionally, I have found such awe and intrigue around photographing people and documenting the mood in a particular scene and seeing it come through a photograph. No matter my subject, I tend to find the moments of quiet and ease that ultimately bring the viewer into the first-hand perspective of experiencing that moment.
And then there’s the writing.
As a writer, I am similarly drawn to helping the reader connect with the stories and emotions of others to find connection within themselves. I write to inspire thoughtful conversation and to bring the often glossed over topics to light. Diving deep into stories allows me to retell them with authenticity and expand the stories’ reach to a wider audience.
